What is aquaplaning?

aquaplaning

Aquaplaning is an issue that is common in areas where wet weather is the norm; namely, countries such as the UK. Posing serious safety issues to drivers experiencing the planing, as well as other vehicle users on the road, aquaplaning is something which can be avoided with the right know-how.

Why does aquaplaning occur?

When water settles atop the road’s surface, it can create an instance in which vehicles driving along can lose traction on the surface and get into a skid whereby the vehicle lifts off the surface of the road, moving instead along a cushion of water.

Why is it dangerous?

The reason aquaplaning poses such a threat to drivers is that once atop the cushion of water, the car experiences an uncontrollable skid. There is little the driver of the vehicle can do once in this skid, and subsequently it is a dangerous position for any driver to find themselves in. As with any instance where drivers find themselves out of control of their vehicle, drivers should be mindful of the potential hazards their vehicle could cause when travelling voluntarily as there is potential for collisions, whether that be with other vehicles or stationary objects.

Once in a skid, there are some things that can be done to lessen the severity of the situation, namely:

  • easing off the accelerator to regain traction
  • steering in the direction of the skid until the vehicle’s rear tyres regain traction

How to avoid aquaplaning

Though, as mentioned above, skids can be lessened by taking the correct actions once experiencing aquaplaning, it is – of course – preferable to avoid the situation altogether. This can be done by taking note of the following factors, all of which are necessary precautions to avoid aquaplaning:

  • tyres should be at a proper, adequate pressure
  • narrow and unworn tyres are preferable in conditions of very wet road surfaces
  • reduced speeds in the instance of wet road surfaces
  • conscious avoidance of standing water on roads’ surfaces
  • electronic stability control (though this should not be used in place of defensive driving techniques and proper tyre selection)
